Interactive Whiteboards
An interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive board which
is connected to a digital projector and a
computer. This device allows
teachers and students to interact with the computer and its applications.
The projector displays
the image from the computer screen on the board. The computer can
then be controlled by touching the board, either directly or with a special
pen that acts as the mouse. There are a number of manufacturers of interactive
whiteboards and the district has adopted the following brands as standards.
What are the benefits of using an interactive whiteboard?
- Enhanced demonstration and modeling
- Allows teacher to save lessons for posting to the web or future use
- Promotes active learning and collaboration
- Enhances differentiated instruction
- Encourages varied and seamless use of instructional materials
- Engages and motivates students in the learning process
- Promotes student participation through student interaction
What equipment is needed? (see additional equipment below)
- Computer
- LCD projector
- Interactive Whiteboard
How does it work?
The computer is connected to the projector and the projector is connected to the whiteboard. The projector displays the computer screen onto the board. The computer can then be controlled from the board. As you point at icons etc. on the board using your finger or an appropriate electronic 'pen', the action is transmitted to the computer just like using a mouse.
Pre-order Considerations
Location:
- Make sure that you find a location for your board that is accessible and visible by both you and your students
- Place the height of the board so you and your students can reach the top of the board (suggestion 30” from the floor to bottom of the board)
- Located away from overhead lighting
- Find a location close to a power source
- Location should have a solid flat service behind it
Additional Equipment Needed:
- You will need an LCD projector to use with each device
- You will need a computer to use with each device
Making the item a permanent fixture:
- Wireless option is highly suggested for all devices to reduce the amount of cables (SMART Board wireless not suggested at this time)
- Mounting the LCD projector is highly suggested
- Estimated cost for mounting LCD projector and Interactive Whiteboard is parts: $700, labor: $500
- Contact Martin Myrtle at the Service Center for bids on mounting board and projector
Making the item mobile:
- Wireless option is highly suggested for all devices to reduce the amount of cables
- If you are making the board mobile, you will need to order a stand
- A mobile cart for a computer and projector should be considered
